Running a retail storefront or commercial space in Kolkata comes with a unique set of weather challenges. Between scorching summer heat along high-footfall streets like Gariahat or Park Street and torrential monsoons, keeping display windows cool and entryway threshold dry is critical for daily business.
Installing a retractable awning for a shopfront in Kolkata gives you flexible shelter: extend it to shade merchandise and shield walk-in customers, or retract it during heavy winds and evening trade. However, ordering the wrong dimensions can block your primary signage, hit passing pedestrians, or fail under water weight.
Before requesting an installation estimate, use this guide to plan the width, projection, clearance height, and wall mounting for your storefront sun shade.

The width of your commercial shop awning determines how effectively you shade your window displays and entrance door without interfering with neighbouring shops or overhead branding.
“Projection” is the horizontal distance the fabric canopy extends out from the building wall when fully rolled out. Getting the projection right requires balancing shade area against overhead clearance.
Every retractable arm awning must slope downward to shed rain effectively. In Kolkata’s monsoon season, a minimum 14° to 15° slope angle (roughly a 1:4 ratio—for every 1 metre of projection, drop the front bar by ~25 cm) is essential. Without adequate pitch, rainwater will pool on the fabric, causing the internal folding arms to bend or snap.
To ensure pedestrian safety and unhindered access:
Formula:
Mounting Height=Front Bar Clearance (2.2m)+Pitch Drop
Example: For a 2-metre projection with a 0.5-metre pitch drop, your wall bracket mounting height must be at least 2.7 metres (~8.8 feet) off the ground.
Retractable arm awnings act as a cantilevered lever. When fully extended, the wind and structural weight exert leverage forces on the wall brackets.
Before filling out an awning measurement sheet or scheduling an on-site technician, collect these exact figures:
| Checkpoint | Measurement / Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Total Mounting Width | Clear wall space side-to-side | Minimum 100mm flat clearance needed for brackets |
| Available Wall Height | Distance from floor to underside of sign | Checks if 2.2m front bar height can be met |
| Projection Depth | Distance from wall to edge of pavement | Must not cross the road curb or hit street lights |
| Obstructions | CCTV cameras, lights, aircon outdoor units | Needs clear path during opening/closing arc |
| Operation Type | Manual gear crank vs. Motorized switch/remote | Motorized recommended for widths over 4.5 metres |

Retractable arm awnings are designed primarily for sun shade and light to moderate rain. While heavy water runoff sheds easily when pitched correctly (at 15° or higher), awnings should be retracted during severe thunderstorms, squalls, or cyclone warnings to prevent high wind damage to the mechanical arms.
The lower front edge of the extended canopy should sit at least 2.2 metres (7.2 feet) above the footpath to allow clear pedestrian passage. The wall mounting bracket typically sits higher—between 2.6 metres and 3.0 metres—depending on how far out the canopy projects.
For smaller storefront awnings under 4 metres in width, a manual gear crank is cost-effective and easy to operate. For wider shopfronts or high-ceiling mounting points, a motorized tubular motor system (with remote control or wall switch) is recommended for smoother, effortless daily operation.
